Walker Bay Nature Reserve

Whale Coast, South Africa

About Walker Bay Nature Reserve

Situated on the southwestern Cape just east of Hermanus, Walker Bay forms a coastal nature reserve encompassing five coastal areas between Hermanus and Die Dam near Struisbaai. The largest section, Walker Bay, spans from Klein River to De Kelders at Gansbaai, featuring Die Plaat, a white sandy beach adorned with rocky limestone outcrops and occasional southern right whales offshore. The scenic Klein River lagoon, to the northwest, intermittently meets the sea. This picturesque and pristine reserve teems with coastal and marine life, earning a reputation as one of South Africa's premier land-based whale-watching locations. Annually, hundreds of southern right whales congregate in the sheltered bay for breeding and calving.
