About Laingsburg
Known initially as Buffelsrivier (Buffalo River), Laingsburg is a contemporary Karoo village where two rivers converge in an arid expanse beside the N1 highway. It showcases beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings, notably the Dutch Reformed Church and the Lutheran Mission Church. The Laingsburg Flood Museum commemorates the devastating 1981 flood, providing historical insights. The town also presents captivating geological features, like fossilized mudstone layers and volcanic ash from South America. Scenic minor roads connect Laingsburg to neighbouring towns and stunning landscapes. Ten kilometres east of Laingsburg, an old British Blockhouse stands as a national monument, a testament to its role during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902. A white quartz band runs across the veld and was used by the San to craft their arrowheads. Today, Laingsburg hosts various events throughout the year, including the Karoo Ultra Marathon, held during the Running Festival, and the exciting Karoofees.
