About Beaufort West Museum
With a rich history dating back to 1939, The Beaufort West Museum complex comprises three national monuments: the Old Dutch Reformed Mission Church, the old town hall, and the Parsonage. The Old Town Hall accommodates the Chris Barnard and Medical Science Exhibition, along with the Beaufort Pictorial, which chronicles the town's historical development. The Mission Church now hosts a permanent exhibition, offering a glimpse into the memories of Beaufort West Dutch Reformed Mission congregation and its relocation in the late 60s. The Parsonage is the house where Professor Chris Barnard, the renowned heart surgeon who performed the world's first heart transplant in 1967, was born and where he spent his childhood.
