About Welvanpas Mountain Biking
Set in the renowned wine growing area of Wellington, approximately 75km North East of Cape Town, Welvanpas has been in continuous ownership of the Retief family since 1704. Piet Retief is a legend in the context of South African history.
The magnificent Bainskloof mountains provide a magical and breathtaking backdrop. With four trails from fairly gentle to Cape Epic hard, (the famous ABSA Cape Epic mountain bike race has visited Welvanpas on several occasions to reward the racers with its outstanding trails), there is something for everyone. Offering single track nirvana through vineyards, citrus groves, fynbos and Protea bushveld it offers a bit of everything. The route can be technically challenging, but oh so rewarding.
Welvanpas is nestled between the Hawekwa and Groenberg mountain ranges. "Die ou Meul", translated as 'The Old Mill', at the trail centre offers liquid refreshment and some of the best carrot cake I have sampled during my extensive research programme. Dan Retief bakes his own traditional bread which is used in the fabulous sandwiches on offer. Welvanpas also sells its medal winning wines direct to the public.
