About Clifftop Birdwatching

Most keen birders feel that summer months is much better in Welgevonden than in the cold winter months. There is a bigger diversity of birds to spot in the summer months with all the visiting migrants.

Winter can also be very rewarding with the drop their leaves it is easier to identify and photograph all the birds.

In Welgevonden the bird community is dominated by a small number of common species and there is a comprising very many rare species. The most abundant two species (ring neck dove, Yellow fronted canary) accounted for about 25% of bird sightings recorded and with the subsequent five species (red eyed dove, common wax bill, common bulbul, arrow-marked babble and Natal Franklin) accounts for about 50% of sightings.

In total a number of 280 different bird species have been identified on Welgevonden so far.

Birders can enjoy bird watching from the privacy of the room decks as well as around the Lodge area. On game drives the rangers are more than happy to assist guest in finding and identifying the various birds they might spot.

Welgevonden is also home to many predator birds and if you are lucky will hear the call of the Fish Eagle souring high above the Lodge.
