St Helena Bay

The West Coast, South Africa

About St Helena Bay

St Helena Bay, known locally as 'Die Agterbaai', is one of the world’s prime fishing destinations, nourished by the nutrient-rich Benguela Current. Its waters teem with marine life, providing livelihoods for coastal inhabitants and attracting Heaviside, dusky, and common dolphins. Southern right whales, humpback, and killer whales visit for mating and calving. Popular for tourism, especially during the spring wildflower season, it offers stunning views, white sandy beaches, and rich birdwatching opportunities. Stretching from Dwarskersbos to Cape St Martin, the bay includes 18 unique bays, with the main harbour bustling at Sandy Point. Vasco da Gama named it Bahai da Santa Elena in 1497.
