About Mamre
Located 50 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, on the West Coast Way Culture Route and Cape Way Route of the Western Cape, Mamre is a pretty colonial mission town. The village offers interesting legends and history, odd and fun attractions, and beautiful natural scenery. It is said that Abraham pitched his tent here at the ‘great tree of Mamre’, and it is also known as his resting place. At the Mamre Nature Garden, visitors can see more than 234 plant species, including 24 threatened species, as well as an array of reptiles, amphibians and birdlife, and small mammals like Cape Grysbok and Steenbok. In neighbouring Darling, the Tannie Evita se Peron is a famous satire theatre belonging to the renowned comedian Pieter Dirk Uys, offering a giggle-inducing garden filled with statues of politicians, a wonderful restaurant, and fantastic regular shows.
