About VOC Kruithuis
The VOC Kruithuis, also known as the Powder House, is a historic landmark in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Built by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the 17th century, it's the only surviving powder magazine of its kind in the country. Its thick walls and fortress-like design were built to safely store gunpowder for the settlement's defense. Today, restored and preserved as a Provincial Heritage Site, the VOC Kruithuis serves as a museum showcasing South Africa's military history. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring 17th-century cannons, firearms, and military uniforms, offering a glimpse into the region's colonial past.
