About Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve

Named after the Assegaai tree indigenous to the area, Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve lies within the Jonkershoek Valley, near Stellenbosch. Its landscape comprises varied terrain, from steep mountain ridges and ravines to the relatively flat valley floor. Fynbos vegetation dominates, with riparian forest lining the Eerste River. The Assegaaibosch homestead was originally constructed around 1792, and in 1893, the adjacent land was repurposed to establish a trout hatchery. Today, visitors can explore the reserve on foot or by mountain bike, observing diverse flora and fauna, including a variety of birds. Picnic areas are available, and the reserve's proximity to Stellenbosch makes it a popular day trip destination.
