About Schoemansdal Museum

Located in Limpopo, Schoemansdal Museum is an open-air museum designed to recreate the Voortrekker settlement and put visitors in the boots of the Schoemansdal's residents, giving them a real sense of what it was like to live in those days. The original Schoemansdal settlement was established in 1948, but its existence was short-lived. During its heyday, the town was a successful little ivory trading post, with several Portuguese-run trading stores. The trade-off was that the Venda people in the area would provide the ivory in exchange for arms. At some point, the relationship went sour, and the Voortrekkers were driven from the area. This is the life depicted in the reconstructed village that is the Schoemansdal Museum.
