About Wreck of the Grosvenor

The Wreck of the Grosvenor, an East Indiaman, occurred on 4 August 1782 on the Pondoland coast of South Africa. The three-masted ship, weighing 729 tons, was on its return voyage to England when it ran aground. The Grosvenor carried a crew of 132 and 18 passengers, along with a cargo valued at £75,0001. Of the 123 survivors, only 18 reached Cape Town and were repatriated, while the rest either perished or integrated with local tribes. The wreck site is near the location where the Portuguese ship São João had sunk over two centuries earlier. The Grosvenor's tragic fate is a poignant reminder of the perils faced by maritime explorers during the Age of Sail. Today, the wreck remains a significant historical landmark, attracting researchers and history enthusiasts.
