About Msikaba Estuary
Msikaba Estuary, situated in the northern sub-tropical region of the Transkei coastal area in South Africa, is renowned for its pristine condition and negligible human impact. This estuary forms the southern boundary of the Mkhambathi Nature Reserve. It is possibly the deepest South African estuary, with a maximum recorded depth of 35 metres. The estuary is characterised by a well-established recurved sand-bar at its mouth, connecting it to the sea via a narrow and shallow channel. The stratification of salinity significantly influences the distribution of zooplankton within the estuary. Visitors can enjoy the serene beauty of the estuary, which supports diverse marine life and offers a tranquil escape into nature.
