About Mail Coach Robbery Plaque
The plaque at Robber's Pass, located between Pilgrim's Rest and Ohrigstad in Mpumalanga, marks the site of South Africa’s last mail coach robbery. On 7 June 1912, at dusk, the mail coach travelling from Lydenburg to Pilgrim's Rest was held up and robbed of £129 in silver coins by a highwayman. The culprit was later identified as Thomas Dennison, a resident of Pilgrim's Rest. He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. After serving his sentence, Dennison reportedly returned to the town and opened a business named the Highwayman's Garage. The plaque was erected by the National Monuments Council in 1982.
