About Fort Amiel
Fort Amiel Museum is located on a hill in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, overlooking the Ncandu River and offering views of the Drakensberg mountains. Built in 1876 by Major Charles Frederick Amiel and British soldiers, the fort was intended as a lookout but instead served as a commissariat depot, transit camp, and hospital during the First Boer War. Today, the museum exhibits military artefacts from the Anglo-Boer Wars alongside displays on Newcastle’s cultural history. Visitors can explore a traditional Zulu homestead, gardens, and various restored buildings. The museum also offers research services and a popular picnic facility.
