About Kathu

Situated in South Africa, Kathu is the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape province. Kathu, meaning 'the town under the trees', is named after the Camel Thorn forest in which the town is located. The Camel Thorn tree 'Acacia erioloba' forest is one of only two in the world with the other being in Namibia. Founded in the late-1960s, the town and the industrial area of Sishen were established as a result of the iron ore mining activity in the Kalahari, which is one of the five largest open-cast iron ore mining operations in the world. Visitors can look forward to playing a round of golf, viewing an array of wildlife at the adjoining game reserve and discovering Earlier Stone Age artefacts at the Kathu Archaeological Site Complex.
