About Lichtenburg
Situated about 200 kilometres west Johannesburg, the town of Lichtenburg is arguably the prettiest town in the Central District of the North West Province. Having ample underground water in various forms while being surrounded by an arid landscape, the town’s oasis-like atmosphere attracts many visitors from surrounding areas, and scuba divers flock from around the world to dive up to 70 metres deep in the famous, turquoise Wondergat sinkhole. The town’s biggest claim to fame is as the source of the world’s largest red diamond. Heritage attractions include the Ampie Bosman Cultural History Museum, which provides insight into the town’s founding and multi-cultural background. With its tranquil, historic feeling and streets lined with willow trees, Lichtenburg makes for a peaceful base to explore the surrounding region, including the popular Mmabatho casino.
