About Klerksdorp
Located about 200 kilometres south-west of Johannesburg in South Africa’s North West Province, Klerksdorp, also known as Matlosana meaning ‘the city of people’, is a historic agricultural and mining town. South Africa’s largest gold mine, the Vaal Reef Gold Mine, is situated here, and a wealth of historic architecture, which began with the town’s gold rush in 1886, can be explored along the scenic ‘old town’ hiking trail. The Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, just thirteen kilometres outside the city, offers bird watchers the chance to see over 150 species, as well as 30 animal species including rhino. Other highlights include: the town’s original distillery; the Wawielpark resort, offering pools, paddle boats and a water-park; and the exotic plants and pristine gardens of the beautiful Plant House, perfect for a day of leisurely picnicking.
