About Modimolle
Modimolle, the gateway to the Waterberg region in Limpopo, is a two-hour drive from Johannesburg and serves as an eco-tourism hub. Formerly known as Nylstroom, the town's history dates back to the 1870s when Voortrekkers settled, mistakenly believing it to be the Holy Land and the Nile River. Today, Modimolle is a vibrant centre with historical landmarks like wagon wheel tracks, Strijdom House and Museum, a Concentration Camp Graveyard from the Anglo-Boer War, the Moth Memorial, and the Dutch Reformed Church (1889), the oldest in sub-Saharan Africa north of Pretoria. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Bateleur Nature Reserve's 3,000 hectares, offering gorges, rock pools, diverse flora and fauna, and 10 Stamvrug Hiking Trails. The town also provides access to attractions such as the Waterberg Zipline, Donkerpoortdam for water sports, Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm, Nylsvley Nature Reserve, Euphoria Golf Course, and De Wildt Shingwedzi Cheetah and Wildlife Centre.
