About Cape St Blaize Cave
Carving its way into the cliffs below the Mossel Bay lighthouse, the Cape St Blaize Cave offers a glimpse into the distant past. This natural grotto, 10 metres high and 72 metres wide, provided ample shelter for early humans who thrived here for over 200,000 years. Archaeological evidence suggests a rich diet of shellfish, a testament to the cave's proximity to the sea. While the cave was eventually vacated by humans, it continued to be a refuge for bats, earning the nickname "Bat's Cave." Today, it's home to curious dassies. The cave remains an important archaeological site, offering insights into the lives of the San hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi people. Its strategic location also makes it a popular spot for whale and dolphin watching.
