About Old English Fort 1899
Declared a monument in 1999, the English Fort above Cogmanskloof, located 4km from Montagu towards Ashton, holds historical significance from the second Boer War in 1899. Constructed by stonemason William Robertson and garrisoned by the Gordon Highlanders, the fort strategically deterred Boer forces. Positioned above the R62 road, it features mortared stonework, 21 'waisted' loopholes, and a circular stone platform, suggesting the presence of a water tank and roof.
