Mooi River

So scenic is this river and its surrounds that the early settlers dubbed it ‘Mooi’ – the Afrikaans word for ‘pretty’. Today it is still an area of great natural beauty, particularly during heavy rains, when the river floods and the Mooi River Falls become a rushing torrent of cascades. A small town of the same name is perched on its leafy banks and serves as an enticing stop along the popular Midlands Meander arts and crafts route. On the river itself visitors can enjoy boat cruises and fly fishing excursions, while in town history buffs can explore the Rhode House Museum, an old home showcasing the development of the region over the years. Tours to the area many stud farms can be pre-arranged and for nature lovers, the nearby Craigieburn Dam is an idyllic spot for picnics and camping.
