The Modjadji Cycad Reserve, situated near Tzaneen, houses the largest concentration of the rare endemic cycad, Encephalartos transvenosus, globally. Covering 560 hectares in the foothills above Modjadji village, the reserve retains an unspoiled, prehistoric ambience where ancient cycads flourish. Some reaching 13 metres in height and bearing hefty 34kg cones, these cycads are true giants. Visitors can explore the reserve's gentle hiking paths, spotting wildlife and over 170 bird species.
