About Maphelane Nature Reserve
Mapelane Nature Reserve, the southernmost reserve within iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park), lies along the south bank of the Umfolozi River where it meets the Indian Ocean, directly across from the village of St Lucia. The reserve’s warm waters provide excellent conditions for ski boating and surf fishing, while the rocky intertidal pools are ideal for spearfishing and collecting mussels, oysters, and crayfish. The self-guided Umphafa Trail offers a rewarding hike for those eager to explore further. Birdwatchers can spot nearly 200 recorded species, making it a prime destination for avian enthusiasts. The dense coastal forest is home to small antelope, monkeys, mongooses, and red squirrels, while hippos and crocodiles are frequently seen along the estuary.
