About Port Elizabeth City Hall

Port Elizabeth City Hall, located in Market Square in the heart of Port Elizabeth, is a striking landmark that blends history with civic life. Built between 1858 and 1862, the building is distinguished by its elegant clock tower, added in 1883, and its designation as a national monument in 1973. Despite suffering a fire in 1977, it was carefully rebuilt, preserving its heritage. What makes the City Hall unique is its dual role as both a functioning Council Chamber and a venue for concerts, lectures, and community events. Visitors can admire its Victorian architecture, explore the surrounding Market Square, and view the replica of the Diaz Cross, commemorating Bartholomew Diaz’s arrival in Algoa Bay in 1488.
