About Old Slave Tree
The Old Slave Tree in George, located in front of the Tourism Bureau on York Street, is one of the largest and oldest trees in the Southern Hemisphere. This oak tree was planted in 1811 by Landros van Kervel. It is believed to have earned its name due to the lock and chain attached to its base, which is linked to an old legend. The story goes that slaves were once chained to the tree when the site was home to a jail. Visitors to the Tourist Information Centre can learn more about the various legends associated with the area.
