About George Museum

The George Museum, located in the heart of George, offers a comprehensive look into the region's rich cultural and industrial history. Housed in the historic Drostdy building, constructed between 1812 and 1815, the museum traces the town's development as a Dutch East India Company outpost in 1777. Once central to the area's economy, the museum's primary focus is the timber industry, with exhibits featuring antique tools, a yellowwood woodcutter's cottage replica, and wooden wagons. Inside the Sayers Hall, an art gallery displays works reflecting the region's artistic heritage, while an upstairs exhibition delves into the painful history of forced removals during the Apartheid era. The outdoor area features a collection of labelled indigenous trees, enhancing the visitor experience.
