About Vereeniging

Where the Klip River empties into the Vaal River, the industrial Gauteng town of Vereeniging is home to rich history, striking natural landscapes and wonderful wildlife. The city is the site where the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed, which brought the Second Boer War to an end, and a memorial commemorates this at the city library. The Sharpeville Township and Memorial commemorate those who lost their lives at the tragic historic Sharpeville massacre during Apartheid. One of the most important archaeological sites in the world is located here, the Klip River Terrace, where numerous Stone Age implements have been found. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy a wide variety of overnight hikes through the stunning 12 000-hectare-wide Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve.
