Tswaing Meteorite Crater

Tswaing Meteorite Crater, situated north of Pretoria, South Africa, is a striking natural landmark formed by a meteorite impact around 220,000 years ago. Visitors can walk the trails encircling the crater, explore the on-site museum, and enjoy recreational activities such as birdwatching and picnicking in the reserve. The crater measures roughly 1 kilometre across and 200 metres deep, with a central lake fed by rainfall. Notably, Tswaing is recognised as one of the world’s most intact meteorite craters, combining geological significance with cultural heritage, and is preserved under the Ditsong Museums, offering education and outdoor adventure in one destination.
