About Welkom
Situated roughly 140 kilometres northeast of Bloemfontein in South Africa’s Free State Province, the country’s youngest town goes by many names including Welkom, Circle City, Mvela, and others. Founded after the discovery of gold at a local farm, the city is rich in historical monuments and heritage attractions, including the fascinating Gold Museum, the Afrikaans Language Monument, the Old Indaba Bluegum Tree, and many others. The beautiful Theronia Pan and Bird Sanctuary, numerous flocks of flamingos, and a plethora of well-kept and pretty parks make the town a delight for walks and lazy afternoons of picnicking. More active activities on offer include golf, rugby, soccer, netball, tennis, hockey, cricket, bowling and snooker. Make sure to take in one of the spectacular theatre, music, or academic events at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre.
