The Indian District

Durban's rich Indian culture is concentrated in the old Indian part of town, centred around Doctor Yusuf Dadoo Street (formerly Grey Street). The area is home to the impressive Juma Musjid Mosque, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The quarter also includes the bustling Victoria Street Market, a two-storey building filled with clothing, jewellery, and leather goods, along with a few spice shops that preserve the area's traditional roots. While modern malls like The Pavilion and Gateway have shifted some of the Indian market's focus, the Indian Quarter retains its charm. Exploring narrow alleys like Madressa and Ajmeri arcades, visitors can immerse themselves in the area's unique atmosphere and taste the iconic bunny chow—a local curry dish served in a hollowed loaf.
