About Tana Baru Cemetery
Tana Baru Cemetery is a Muslim cemetery located in the historically rich and culturally significant area of Bo-Kaap in Cape Town. The cemetery is where some of the earliest and respected Muslim settlers of South Africa were buried. It is composed of three independent burial grounds, lying adjacent to each other and forming a continuous landmass. Two of these burial grounds are on land granted to the Muslim community in 1805 and 1842 as public burial grounds. The third burial ground consists of private plots purchased by prominent Cape Imams, as the resting place of their respective congregations.
