About Robben Island Village
Robben Island village, home to less than 200 residents, is comprised of around 100 houses, with only about 40 currently inhabited, which lends an air of mystery to the island at night. The turreted Anglican Church, now Dutch Reformed, continues to hold services twice a month. The village boasts amenities such as a large swimming pool, a rugby field, a cricket pitch, a crèche, and a primary school. At the southern end, the Governor's residence and the parsonage, grand Victorian-era buildings, now house a conference centre and a guest house. The panoramic view from this area is breathtaking, with Table Mountain, Devil's Peak, and Lion's Head dominating the horizon. Other intriguing sites on the island include Van Riebeeck's old quarry, World War II rifle posts, demolished military barracks, concrete lookout points from WWII, and the shipwreck of the Fong Chung No. 11.
