About Palm Tree Mosque

The Palm Tree Mosque in Cape Town is the second oldest Muslim place of worship in South Africa, established in the early 19th century. Originally owned by freed slaves Frans van Bengalen and Jan van Boughies, who purchased the property in 1807, it has significant historical value. Jan van Boughies left the mosque to his widow upon his death at 112, ensuring its continued use as a mosque. The building, dating back to 1780, is the oldest unaltered structure on Long Street.
