About Noor El Hamedia Mosque
Located in the heart of Cape Town's city centre, Noor El Hamedia Mosque, also referred to as the Hanafee Mosque, is among the oldest mosques in the area. It was constructed in 1881, in commemoration of AbuBakr Effendi. Effendi was sent to the Cape by the Turkish government to try to resolve some religious disputes. He then, as a scholar in the Hanafi Madhab, opened a religious school soon after his arrival.
