About Kramat of Shaykh Mohamed Hassen
Kramat of Shaykh Mohamed Hassen is famously known as one of the most visible and grand of the shrines that rest on Signal Hill. This sacred site of worship and remembrance is in honour of Sheik Mohamed Hassen Gaibie Shah al Qadri, a follower of the father of Islam in the Cape Sheikh Yusuf of Goa. There are more than 20 kramats in the Peninsula area of which 8 form part of a 250-year-old prophecy by one of the first Muslim exiles to the Cape. They form a “circle of Islam” a ring of holy shrines that protects the Peninsula from natural disasters.
