Elim

Cape South Coast, South Africa

About Elim

Located in Cape Agulhas, Elim is a historic town home to a close-knit community of farmers, farm workers, and artisans. Established in 1824 as the third Moravian mission station in the Cape, Elim holds significant cultural and historical importance. It is notable for being the site of the first slave monument in South Africa, honouring the emancipated slaves who sought solace in this sanctuary of the Overberg region. The town's charm lies in its whitewashed cottages and a picturesque main street adorned with fig trees. Despite its 19th-century ambience, Elim offers a comfortable variety of accommodations, ranging from cosy bed and breakfasts to self-catering units. At the heart of Elim's heritage is the Old Mill Tearoom, which forms part of the heritage centre. Here, visitors can delve into the community's rich history and gain insights into its past.
