Lying at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, between the coastal villages of Arniston and Struisbaai on the south-western Cape coast, De Mond Nature Reserve offers sand dunes and varied coastal vegetation. This landscape is home to several species of small mammals, such as grysbok, steenbok, grey duiker and caracal as well as reptiles and amphibians. There is also abundant birdlife here, including two threatened tern species and the rare African black oystercatcher.
