About Reiterdenkmal
The Reiterdenkmal, or Equestrian Statue, is 4.5m high and stands on a pedestal made of granite found in the Okahandja area in Namibia. The statue, which represents an eventual victory after heavy fighting, depicts a German Schutztruppe cavalryman in full uniform, but without the scabbard and saddlebags.
The statue has long been the subject of controversy and is seen as a continued display of German superiority by some. The statue was first moved from its original position between the Christus Kirche and the Alte Feste Fort in 2009 when it was put into storage. It was re-erected in front of the Alte Feste Fort in 2010, but the controversy just got worse until on 25 December 2013, after violent protests, it was removed from its plinth and put into storage in the Alte Feste Fort where it has remained since that day.
