Heroes' Acre

Windhoek, Namibia

About Heroes' Acre

Heroes Acre lies about 10 kilometres south of Windhoek in the Auas Mountains and is a controversial monument of Namibia's patriotism. The construction of this monument was to foster the patriotism and nationalism of Namibia and to pass the legacy on to younger generations. The Heroes Acre monument was built by North Korean workers and was officially inaugurated in 2002 in a solemn celebration by former president Sam Nujoma.

The entrance gates are accompanied by two women kneeling and holding bouquets of flowers as a symbolic gesture to visitors which is a Namibian tradition. The names and pictures of the 174 Namibian heroes are engraved in black marble which makes up the centerpiece of the Heroes Acre monument.
