About Bird Rock Guano
Vast deposits of guano - a rich source of fertiliser - are deposited daily by the high numbers of sea birds that gather on Bird Rock when the tide is low enough that the islet is exposed. These deposits were once washed off the rock with each high tide, but a Guano Platform that was erected in the 1930s has since allowed the guano to collect and be harvested.
