About Van Zyls Pass

Van Zyls Pass is located between two very steep mountain ranges in the Marienfluss region of Namibia. It's named after the Dutch explorer who found the pass in the 1920's and is considered the most famous pass in Namibia.

It is a classic extreme route made by travellers over the mountains over time, at an elevation of 948 metres above the sea level and the only way to get there is via the D3703 district road through Okangwati. The lead up to the route is about 10 to 15 kilometres of tough driving through boulders, ravines, and badlands and is outrageously steep. The descent from the top covers a distance of ten kilometres usually taking about three to six hours.
