About Plaine Magnien

Located in the Grand Port District of southeast Mauritius, Plaine Magnien is a small and unusual village which offers the only airport on the island, some intriguing heritage, and several modern amenities and accommodation options. Besides the gorgeous beaches which the island is so fondly known for, and some wonderfully lush and green natural surrounds, the town is home to an extraordinary and mysterious site of seven pyramids. The structures are identical to those found in Tenerife, suggesting that a single civilisation travelled to various African islands and built all these structures. The UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat is another important landmark for history enthusiasts. These remains of an immigration depot are among the earliest manifestations of the global economic system and one of the greatest migrations in history (shortly after the British abolition of slavery).
