About Pieter Both
Pieter Both is a mountain in the Moka Range, and, at 820 metres, it is the second highest in Mauritius. It was named after the first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, and its most notable feature is the gigantic head-shaped rock formation at the very top. The mountain is popular for climbing, and it takes around an hour to get to the top when following the main ridge. The climb is rated as mildly difficult, and the use of a rope is advised. Once at the pinnacle, the head-shaped boulder can be ascended with the aid of several iron spikes that have been fixed to it. The flat top is about two metres across, and climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounds.
