About Zomba Botanical Garden

Zomba Botanic Garden in southern Malawi unfolds like a living museum of flora nestled at the foot of Zomba Plateau. Founded by Scottish botanist Alexander Whyte between 1891 and 1895, originally as the grounds of the British Consul’s residence, the garden began as an experimental site for introducing new and useful plant species. Covering around 25 hectares today, the garden boasts a rich collection of indigenous and exotic trees, shrubs and medicinal plants, including majestic Khaya and various native species. Paths wind along the valley of the Mulunguzi River, offering shaded strolls, tranquil bird-song and glimpses of Malawi’s botanical diversity. It is well worth visiting for anyone who delights in peaceful walks, botany, bird-watching or colonial-era history a green tranquillity amid Zomba’s old-town charm.
