About Kikuyu Town Field Kitchen for Grandmothers
Our Filed kitchen provides an important community resource. Most of the grandmothers who attend our field kitchen for lunch still work 15 hours a day in the field tending their gardens. From small plots of land they grow vegetables. But it is never enough and so our soup kitchen is vital for their support. These grandmothers have the responsibility for caring for very young children at the centre and often there is not enough food to go around.
The associated school is also an important community facility. Our visitors will be engaged not only with children but in meeting the grandparents as One Horizon’s work involves at Kikuyu involves the very young and the very old. Food parcels are distributed at the centre to ensure that children and their grandparents receive regular nutrition. And in addition to this and to ensure that the children receive a good education a complete education curriculum is conducted at the centre
Upon arrival at the centre our guests can become involved in the following activities:
• Meet the grandparents of the children
• Help organise food hampers and;
• Distribute clothing and bedding supplies.
Our guests can also choose from the following activities with the children
• Helping prepare lunch
• Feeding the toddlers
