About Thimlich Ohinga

Thimlich Ohinga is a complex of stone-built ruins in Migori County, Kenya, near the town of Ouma. It is the largest and best preserved of the traditional enclosures that were built by pastoral communities in the Lake Victoria region from the 16th to the mid-20th century. Thimlich Ohinga served as a fort for people and livestock, as well as a social and cultural center. Travellers can visit the site and explore the four main enclosures, each with extensions and entrances. They can also learn about the history and culture of the different groups that inhabited the site over time. Thimlich Ohinga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a remarkable example of the dry-stone walling technique.
