About AWOL Bicycle Township Tour
AWOL offers a guided bicycle township tour, where travellers will learn about the political past of Apartheid, how to click like a Xhosa, and join a Sangoma for a traditional ceremony, all whilst cycling through the community. A local guide will take travellers around the township visiting exciting places and explaining some local Xhosa customs. During school, travellers will visit a local crèche where the teachers work under challenging circumstances. Part of the tour proceeds goes towards the betterment of their facilities. A highlight of the tour is visiting a Sangoma (traditional healer) who performs interactive dancing and drumming. For lunch, travellers will visit a local African restaurant or an entrepreneur who will host the tourist group in their home and prepare authentic African tea or lunch. 10% of all tour proceeds go directly to Masicorp, a non-profit organisation. The tour departs daily at 10 am from Chasmay Road Campus and includes the hiring of old-fashioned Dutch bicycles.
