About Simbavati River Lodge

Simbavati is situated in the heart of the world-renowned Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park. It takes its name from the local Shangaan language, translated as “the place where the lions come down from the stars”. The focus of the lodge is on the excellent big-5 game viewing, breathtaking views and friendly and knowledgeable staff, all in an environment where guests and families are made to feel comfortable and relaxed from the moment they arrive. Surrounded by 12 000 hectares of wildlife rich wilderness, this is the perfect place from which to experience an authentic and affordable African safari. Game drives are conducted by experienced field guides and Shangaan trackers in open 4X4 vehicles and offer excellent photographic opportunities. Animals you can expect to see in the area are lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo as well as other species such as kudu, zebra, warthog, giraffe, monkey to name a few. Nocturnal animals, including the big cats, are regularly sighted on night drives. Bird viewing is spectacular, with over 360 recorded species including various eagles, vultures, kingfishers, woodpeckers, buzzards, herons, egrets, owls, weavers. The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is one of the few places in the world where you have the opportunity to see the unique white lion in their natural environment. The resident lion prides of Timbavati carry the recessive gene "chinchillia' that is responsible for this unusual anomaly and guests have a great chance of seeing these lions while on a game drive in the early morning and evening when animals are most active. Simbavati River Lodge is an intimate, family-friendly camp built on the banks of the Nhlaralumi River – a beautiful watercourse when rain is plentiful during the summer months, and a dry riverbed in the drier winter months. Shaded by ancient Jackalberry and Leadwood trees, the lodge is warm and welcoming, with a generous, spacious design and accommodation for guests in privately situated tented safari rooms or thatched chalets which are all comfortably furnished and have en-suite bathrooms. Common areas include a generously proportioned lounge, bar, boma, private pool and extensive decks with breathtaking views overlooking the river where regular wildlife sightings take place and guests can unwind. The tented spa treatment rooms also offer indulgent massages and rituals for complete relaxation. Children welcome | Free WiFi hotspot

Dining & Cuisine

Dining - Restaurant

Several times a week, dinner in the camps is a more hearty, campfire style meal served under the stars in a ‘boma’, a circular enclosure originally made from branches. The cosy, lantern-lit ambience recalls the early days of safari pioneers.

Another authentic safari experience is dining out under the star in a boma (an enclosed circular dining area) around the campfire. This usually takes place every 2nd night.

The gentle flicker of lanterns, candle-light and a welcoming open fire truly conjures up what is magical about a safari.

Dining - Boma

Dinner is a festive event which is alternatively served around the campfire in the open-air boma or in the thatched dining area. Dinner consists of an African and Western cuisine with exciting tastes for the more adventurous as well as various conventional options.
