About Sentinel Cave Camp

Sentinel Cave Camp, located high on the escarpment of the Northern Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, offers a rugged and remote overnight experience for seasoned hikers. Nestled in a dramatic crack behind the Sentinel peak, the two caves sit just 20 metres apart and provide natural shelter with their cathedral-like roofs. Though not deep, their positioning offers protection from the elements, making them a practical stop for those tackling the Amphitheatre hike or heading towards the Tugela Falls. Access is via the chain ladders near the QwaQwa border post, and the caves operate on a first-come, first-served basis. With no facilities, limited water sources, and basic sleeping space for up to four people per cave, this is a true back-to-nature experience. The panoramic views and sense of isolation make Sentinel Cave Camp a memorable stop for adventurous spirits seeking the wild beauty of the Drakensberg.
