Welgelegen Manor

Mpumalanga, South Africa

About Welgelegen Manor

Set in Cosmos countryside and tranquil farmlands an hour south of Johannesburg, lies the magnificent Welgelegen Manor, built by South Africa’s iconic architect, Sir Herbert Baker in 1912. Steeped in romance and history, Welgelegen recalls the legendary Groote Schuur Estate in the Cape on which the design was based. Welgelegen Manor has been magnificently restored to its former glory and offers the perfect getaway for a country house weekend. Combining 19th century old-world charm with modern hotel luxury and an inspired example of the Arts and Crafts movement. Beautiful teak doors, marble and granite floors, gleaming woodwork and brasswork are testament to the craftsmen of a bygone era. A sense of peace and tranquillity greets you on arrival, echoing through the reception rooms to the more than spacious suites. Staying true to its English residential style, the eight suites fuse contemporary comfort with the timeless glamour and heritage associated with this historical property. Each suite offers exceptional grace and comfort with views over the landscaped terraces, pool or rose gardens. Country life is synonymous with good food and the resident chef conjures up daily treats from breakfast to dinner. Savour an English country afternoon tea. Enjoy the abundant birdlife in the extensive surrounds, relax with a book in the rose gardens or at the pool, and play a game of lawn tennis or croquet. Challenge your partner to pool, billiards or snooker in the Billiard Room, or cards and board games in the library or games room. For movie buffs there is a dedicated ‘theatre’ with wide-screen. And for the more active there are country walks, archery and a well-maintained grass strip for fly-in visits. Welgelegen lends itself to special occasions and exclusive board meetings. Welgelegen Manor

"Excellent and opulent place to rest - we stayed here before and after our flight from the UK. Amelia was especially accomodating and the Manor itself was stunning. The food in the evening was beautiful and the staff were remarkably flexible with our requests. A thoroughly enjoyable stay"

Portfolio Expert Review
"Only an hour from Joburg and you’re stepping into a bygone era. The historical manor house and eight suites exude that English old-world charm, but with today’s luxury and comfort. You can’t help feeling like the lord and lady of the manor. Fancy a game of croquet or lawn tennis anyone?"
